The “Ma” 間

What we can learn from the Japanese concept of “Ma” — the void, the space between things — is that it represents what is necessary to move from one entity or articulation to another.
Ma applies to everything: to architecture, to visual art, and of course to music and to life itself.
For musicians, it is the bond between sound phenomena — not mere silence, but the transition that allows things to be connected to one another.
Within this “void,” we free ourselves from what has been, in order to connect it to what is yet to come.
Knowing how to listen to and feel Ma is the key to musical correlation and to the right tempo — a sine qua non condition for achieving unity.
